This photo was taken at a service stop on our way to UIUC. The ride from Columbus, OH, to UIUC was long, and my friends and I were all very hungry since it was about dinner time when we stopped at the gas station. Like any convenience store at the service stop, the one we went to has a great variety of snack options. Everything seemed so tasty, and I simply wanted to purchase everything – well, that is if my wallet allowed it. One of my all-time favorite snacks is Takis. They are extremely flavorful and addicting. At some locations, I can find a lot of Takis, while at other locations, they might be hard to locate. I was so ecstatic when I found bags and bags of them at the convenience store that we stopped by. However, the Takis there was priced a lot higher than a typical bag I’d see at supermarkets and other convenience stores. As college students, we often find ourselves struggling financially or having difficulties in managing our personal finance. I know I needed to save up for not only my regular fixed expenses but also my graduation trip. Additionally, I want to maintain a healthy diet, and eating too many fried items or spicy snacks could cause me to break out. Keeping these valid reasons in mind, as strong as my desire to eat Takis was, I decided to not bring a bag out of the store with me. The reasons behind my decision to not purchase Takis are something that I have developed as I grow up. I have learned to take better care of my body by consuming healthier products, and I have also learned the consequences of eating too many processed snacks. As kids, we were not exposed to such knowledge and were not as aware of the choices we make. Now as young adults, we have to take more factors into consideration when making decisions. We have also become better at self-control – something that kids would not do so well with. Growing up means becoming more self-disciplined. Self-discipline is critical as we age, because we will not always be having someone there telling us what to and what not to do. We will have to make decisions wisely and take responsibility of our own actions. The realization and skills gained as we grow will continue to shape our future decisions and learning.
