Being Able to Make Your Own Change

Being Able to Make Your Own Change

Each #NewYear brings a lot of change. Or, at least a lot of people want change to come their way with the New Year. However, I think what a lot of people don’t realize is that change isn’t something that typically befalls you; rather, it’s something you have to enact on your own life if you’re wanting it.

It’s sort of the same concept as asking “Why me?” and not realizing that you absolutely can avoid the things that are happening to you. Most people who bemoan their situation or fate don’t actively try to change things for the better or switch up what is happening in their everyday lives. So, they’re left to wonder why the world is pitted against them (when it’s really not).

That’s why I think it’s quite important to own your experience and have agency in your life. When you call the shots and know how to snap out of a drought or halt the flow of particularly bad streak in your life, you feel a lot more empowered with your thoughts, emotional health, financial security, and enjoyment of life. Unfortunately, we’re not taught these sorts of skills by any means, and so people go on complaining about their situation while simultaneously worsening the situation by choosing to stay in that cycle. The worst part? They don’t know any better.

The latest craze I’ve noticed that keeps people couch locked and even more of a home body is monthly subscription boxes. When you can get a few shipping boxes delivered to your front door step each and every month, why would you do anything else like go #shopping if you didn’t have to? There are companies that offer food delivered to your door, there are boxes containing dog toys and treats, and then there are things that span everything in between. If it exists and someone would normally buy it in a store, well, they can buy it online as well.

To me, this #accessibility to everything you need is harmful and causes people to become privileged while taking other important things for granted. And if anything, it furthers the cycle of closing yourself off to the rest of the world and staying cooped up in your own little #online shell. If you can socialize on the internet as well as buy all your normal goods and wares online, why would you ever dare to go back outside and get it yourself if you don’t have to?

To save yourself and your #happiness, of course.
