So strange is this path in the light of much twentieth-century thought that it takes a particular sort of generosity on our part to open ourselves to the mystics’ way of looking at the world; we have to overcome our fear of approaching people who strike us as bizarre and extraordinarily unlike ourselves and maybe recognize that, in associating with the mystics, there is a kind of danger. We are forced to consider ways of thought that are strange to our culture.
