Self improvement can be difficult. From early childhood, we may have learned to just “go with the flow” or “not make waves” and let things come. Unfortunately, that isn’t the best path to self improvement. Sometimes the techniques of self improvement may be taking longer than we would wish, and it can be easy to become discouraged. This article will provide some self motivation techniques that can help you stay on track.
Take Action – Even a small step will help move you toward your goal. You may find that once you get started, even with the smallest item, it will encourage you to do more, until you find you’ve completed the item.
Division – If your goals seem too large or difficult to accomplish, break them down into smaller, discrete steps. Make a list, and as you complete each item, check it off. Seeing the list of completed tasks grow helps provide additional motivation to continue.
Talk – Tell others about your goals and what you are going to do to get there. Their support can make a huge difference in keeping yourself motivated. Even if they don’t actively support your efforts, having told them to others can help you achieve results, if for no other reason than to “show them you can.” While this may not be the best way to self-improvement, anything that can keep you moving will be better for you in the end.
Visualize Success – Look at your desires, and visualize yourself with your goals completed. Seeing yourself in your new future motivates you to keep up with the small tasks it takes to achieve the greater goal.
Visualize Failure – Look at what might be if you don’t meet your goals. The idea here is from a Neuro-Lunguistic Programming technique that mentally links pain with inaction. Imagine any bad consequences that may occur if you don’t do what you have to in achieving your goals.
Be True To Yourself – Are you interested in what you are doing? If you are not, you might want to do something else. If it is just a task you dislike, relate it clearly in your mind to your ultimate goal. If you just aren’t connecting, look at why you have your goals. If they are coming from someone else, perhaps it’s time to look at what YOU want, not what someone else wants for you. It is SELF-improvement, after all.
Energy Boosting – You need energy for self motivation. Proper nutrition and plenty of exercise will help, as will plenty of sleep. Watch out for temporary energy boosters like caffeine, but you can only use it so much without it causing other problems. Sugar has a similar problem. Sure a candy bar will help, but only for about 20 minutes, then comes the dreaded “sugar crash”. Too many sugary items, and you can bring on weight gain that is probably NOT on your list of goals. If you find energy boosting techniques or foods that work for you, make a list and keep it handy for when you aren’t quite feeling up to that next task.
Humor- Find humor in your situation or your surroundings. A good laugh can overcome the feeling of being overwhelmed that drains your self motivation.
Motivation techniques certainly work, but you do have to go back to the first item, and Take Action. Using any of these techniques can help with your self-motivation. Using several or all and you will be achieving your goals faster than you might think!
