The Car
Yes, of course this is a 1931 Chevrolet Convertible Cabriolet (but you knew that, right?) The car was digitally recorded at Swope’s Cars of Yesteryear museum in Elizabethtown, Kentucky in 2014.
Space is at a premium inside the museum but there is an ample selection of finely crafted automobiles within the museum – everything from a gorgeous “passion pink” and black ‘57’ T-Bird to a meticulously appointed custom bodied 1939 Rolls-Royce Wrath WRB Sedanca DeVille, coach work by Gurney-Nutting. (Wow, that was a mouth full!) …………and entrance to the museum is “free”. Free to the point that when I offered a donation, my offer was cordially declined with the explanation of; “thank you very much for you offer but Mr. Swope assembled these fine old classic cars for the appreciation of the public and forbids the collection of any monies”. Sincerely friendly folks is all we met during our short excursion down to the “Bourbon Capital of The World – Elizabethtown and Bardstown, Kentucky. This is America at its finest…………..
After researching and viewing numerous vintage advertisements of the 1920’s – 1930’s era, it is apparent that Chevrolet’s “body copy” was stodgy at best. Makes one wonder if GM had their own in-house ad department or whether they were using an outside agency. It seems evident that management at Chevrolet Division concentrated heavily on technical aspects of their cars as opposed to the heavy “emotional” impact that is so prevalent in today’s automobile marketplace. It is also apparent that Chevrolet was obviously making effort to appeal to a larger segment of women drivers, albeit their body copy dripped with male chauvinism as one example is quoted as; Women especially appreciate the bigger and better Chevrolet. It enables them to go about their daily routines – shopping, marketing, parties, clubs – and stay relaxed and refreshed. (while the men folk slaved away trying to find jobs during the depression in order to try and put food on the table, huh? ………….. I do believe that senior Chevrolet marketing managers needed to take lessons in the female psyche!
I do hope ya’all enjoy. Ya’all come back, ya’ hear.
