Self-Discipline – Gateway To Success

[ad_1]

Success is attracted by the application of definite principles. Right principles are keys that open up the gates on the pathway to the pinnacle of success. One of such principles is the principle of self-discipline.

Self-discipline is an individual’s ability to control their emotions, feelings and whatever they can emotionally be influenced by. In other words it is a man’s ability to control his affections. Acquiring this ability is the gateway to success because without the mastery of this principle the individual is not in position to master the rest neither can he or she make progress in the pursuit of success in any area of life.

As it is a necessity with an individual desiring to achieve greatness in life, so it is with a nation. No nation can become great with gross indiscipline. Some of the offshoots of indiscipline are corruption and decadence. A horse that would not allow it self to be tamed won’t also be decorated and made fit to be mounted by kings and princes. Self-discipline cannot be enforced by an external body, but by you. It is not usually an easy principle to master because humans naturally resist any form of change. They are also naturally products of their habits. No one can keep doing habitually what they have been doing in the past and then expect to see different changes around their life, for it is a man’s habitual thought and speech pattern that determines what is made manifest in his life. For example a student that has been failing in his or her academic work as a result of poor study habits, has to change such habit if they would see success.

Like the name suggests, self-discipline means to say ‘no’ to those habits that you sincerely want to change in your life. Mind is superior to matter, therefore it takes mind power to develop a strong enough will power that can push back and resist the force of negative inclinations in you. Every action begins as a thought seed in your mind, therefore no one can successfully discipline himself or herself without the ability to cut off or terminate every thought of any unwanted action as soon as it originates in the mind. For example; a student at his study desk that allows his thoughts to wander to the fun of going surfing in the beach will soon find himself abandoning those books and heading for the beach except he says ‘No’ to those thoughts immediately.

Most people who succeeded early in life are people who were either guided by mentors to master this principle of self-discipline or they naturally had that ability. It is good to note at this point that people who manage to get to the height of their careers without paying proper attention to the development of this character trait most times crash from great career heights due to an irresponsible action carried out for lack of self discipline. It is never too late to tell your body that you’re in charge. Simply write out a list of the habits that you desire to change in your life and begin to say an emphatic ‘NO’ to yourself each time your mind suggests to you to go and carry out those actions. By so doing, you’re putting a new habit in place. This will eventually replace the old ones that you want to eliminate. The time to start is now!
